Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Option Logo

The Option GlobeSurfer X1 (http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/introducing-option-globesurfer-x1) 3G wireless router can be used as a printer server and a file server by connecting either a printer or an external storage drive to its built-in USB port, enabling you to print or access shared files and folders over the wifi connection or via an ethernet connection. In this post I shall provide short instructions on how to use the print server functionality.

In order to print to the X1, you must first have installed the necessary drivers for your printer onto the PC, if separate drivers are provided - refer to the manufacturer's documentation for details on where these drivers are to be found, but they normally come on a CD as part of the sales package together with a manual or automated installation application.

Connect the printer to the X1 via the USB port with the X1 POWERED OFF. Once connected, power on the X1.

On Windows XP and Vista the procedure is virtually the same, but the wording of individual screens varies between the two operating systems.

Open the Printers folder from the Start menu or from the Control Panel:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Select the option to Add a Printer, the add new printer wizard will be displayed:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Click Next, the following window will be displayed:

Select Custom as the device type and click Next, the following window will be displayed:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Click Finish. On the next screen a list of available printer manufacturers and models will be displayed:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Select your printer from the list, or browse to the location where the drivers are located using the Have Disk button, referring to the printer manufacturer's installation instructions if required. Click Next:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Enter a name for the printer and click Next:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Click Next again (note there is no need to set the printer as shared, unless you specifically want the printer to be shared from YOUR PC):

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Select the option to print a test page if desired to verify that the installation has been successful. Click Next:

Using the Option GlobeSurfer X1 as a print server

Click Finish.

If the page fails to print, verify that both the printer and the X1 are powered on, and that the printer isn't indicating a lack of ink, paper or a paper jam etc. Also verify that the PC has a connection to the X1, either wirelessly or via Ethernet.
Within the properties of the printer itself, which will now be listed, verify on the Ports tab that the IP address of the X1 has been entered correctly and that the printer is set to use that IP port rather than a local port:

Installing the Option Icon range of USB Modems on Mac OS 10.6 (Snow Leopard)

Option Logo

Option have released an updated driver package for the Icon range of devices, providing compatibility with Mac OS 10.6, aka Snow Leopard.

The drivers can be downloaded here:

http://www.option.com/en/support/knowledge-base/article/driver-installat...

and an installation guide is available here:

http://www.option.com/en/support/knowledge-base/article/how-to-setup-a-m...

These drivers allow the user to create an Internet connection within the Mac System Preferences, without the need for a separate connection manager as with Tiger and Leopard versions.

This approach does require that you know the relevant APN (Access Point Name), username and password details for your network operator to enter when creating the connection manually. For reference the settings for the UK operators are as follows:

  • Firefox - web browser

On the Mac platform currently only Firefox is available.

Installation is quick and easy, when inserted into the PC you will be prompted to specify whether or not you want to use the uCAN feature, or whether you want to just use the device's modem functionality.

Windows

Insert the device into the PC, the device will be detected as a CD-ROM device and will autorun - depending on your PC's settings you may find you need to browse to the device in My Computer and launch the uCAN.exe file:

Once the required driver files are installed, Windows will then detect further new hardware and install the device as a USB modem. You may be prompted to reboot once this process has completed.

Once rebooted, the uCAN dashboard will be displayed, and inserting the device into the PC from now on will launch the dashboard:

Option Icon 451

The left-hand pane displays a list of available portable applications. The uCAN Store icon opens an Explorer window and allows you to browse the contents of the storage card memory.
The right-hand pane displays status information about the mobile connection and allows you to initiate and disconnect the Internet connection.
The unit will automatically configure itself with the correct connection settings for your mobile operator, but should you want to edit these settings manually, you can do so by clicking on the Settings button:

From here you can select from available mobile networks:

Mac

When inserted into a Mac, the installation procedure is very similar: the device will be detected as a CD drive:

In the Extra folder is the necessary driver package for the Icon series.
NOTE - the driver package that comes pre-loaded on the device (at the time of writing at any rate), is only compatible up to MacOS 10.5 (Leopard). Should you be running 10.6 (Snow Leopard), you will need to manually download and instal updated drivers - http://blog.brightpointuk.co.uk/installing-option-icon-range-usb-modems-...

Running the driver installer is a straightforward process, follow the on-screen instructions:

MacOS 10.5:

MacOS 10.6:

Option Icon 451

Once the drivers are installed, you can run the uCAN application, which again will prompt you to specify whether you want to use this feature or just use the device as a modem:

The uCAN application then appears, with the same interface as that used by the Windows application, but with only the Firefox application listed:

Option uCAN Connect - Brand your own connection manager

Option Logo

With mobile broadband becoming increasingly accessible and affordable, and with "cloud-based" email and document hosting services becoming more prevalent - the need for reliable high-speed access to the Internet for both businesses and prosumers is a burgeoning market.

Option have developed the uCAN Connect skinable and customisable dashboard application, together with customisable and replaceable hardware covers for their new range of iCON USB modems.

uCAN Connect combines an intuitive connection manager with a sophisticated user interface. With the modular approach and the unique skinning engine you can adapt the application to your customer's needs.

Smart Skinning

The application can be tailored and branded according to your requirements. Personalise the look and feel: choose a different background, add or remove buttons and toolbars or change the entire layout. The skinning does not only control the look and feel of the application but also controls the localisation options, the application features and the default settings. This solution allows you to make a customised solution for the target market. With the skinning engine you can also allow the end user to choose between the different skins or the skin can be loaded based on the SIM card that is being used. With this smart skinning engine only the sky is the limit.

Cross Platform

With uCAN Connect, Brightpoint can offer the same GUI and same features independent of the platform that is used. Whether you work on Windows or Mac OS, the user experience is the same. This standardisation of user experience across different platforms simplifies the support work and reduces the costs in customer support dramatically.

Auto-Connect

uCAN Connect gives you the same experience with mobile broadband connections as working with WLAN or LAN. Just plug in your device and you are connected! It's as simple as that!

Threshold Limiter & Statistics

Via the threshold limiter and the statistics overview customers are kept informed on their data usage. With limited monthly Internet traffic, alerts can be configured to inform the user when their data allocation has been reached. With the Statistics application users can view their complete connection history.

Live Update

Stay up to date with the latest version of software and firmware. With live update you can choose to have completely automatic updates on a regular basis or you can check for updates manually. It's your choice!

Applications

Applications can not only be added to the uCAN dashboard, making it possible for users to launch external applications directly from the uCAN user interface, but these applications can also be installed as part of the uCAN installation process automatically.

SMS Centre

The SMS Centre has a chat-style view: the messages appear as an ongoing conversation making it easier to pick up the SMS thread history and answer incoming messages.

Pre-paid

Prepaid customers like to be informed about the credit they have left. With uCAN Connect customers can check their available credit and add further credit if needed.
