When combined with the latest 3G Watcher software, which can automatically configure itself with the required Internet connection settings based on the SIM card inserted, it is the perfect remote connectivity solution for the road warrior.
Insert the 308 into an available USB port, the new hardware will be detected automatically as removable storage:

Double click the Installer package:

Click Continue:

Read the license agreement and click Continue:

Click Agree if you accept the terms and conditions:

Select a destination for the required program files and click Continue:

Click Install, you will be warned that upon completion of the installation a reboot will be required:

Click Continue Installation. The required drivers and program files will now be copied to the mac. When finished, click Restart:

When restarted, a new network interface will be detected:

Open the Network Preferences and adjust your Location preferences if desired. In the Applications folder an icon for the 3G Watcher application will have been added:

Double click it to launch the application. The required Internet connection settings will be determined automatically based on the SIM card entered:

To initiate a connection to the Internet, click the Connect button:

Click OK:

Click Finish. An icon will be added to the desktop for the Sierra Wireless Watcher connection manager software, which will now launch automatically:

The required Internet connection settings will be determined automatically based on the SIM card inserted. To initiate the connection, click the Connect button:

To edit the connection details, click on the icon of the spanner to open the Options:

Clicking on the icon of the chat bubble launches the SMS Manager application:


Insert the Sierra Wireless 310U unit into an available USB port on your Mac. The new hardware will be detected automatically as a removable storage device and an icon added to the desktop or the Finder:

Double click the Installer package to launch the installation wizard:

Click Continue:

Click Continue:

Read the license agreement and click Continue:

Click Agree if you accept the terms and conditions of the agreement:

Click Continue:

Click Install:

Enter the details of an administrative account and click OK:

You will be warned that upon completion of the installation the Mac will need to be rebooted. Click Continue Installation. The required files will now be copied to the Mac. This process may take a few minutes.
When complete, click Restart:

Once rebooted, a message will appear indicating that a new network interface device has been detected:

Launch the Network Preferences:

Click Apply. There is no need to adjust any settings.
If running Mac OS 4.x, you will need to launch the Network Preferences manually from the Apple menu as no pop-up window will be displayed.
The Watcher dashboard connection manager will launch automatically:

The Watcher software will configure itself with the appropriate connection settings for your network operator based on the SIM card inserted into the unit. To initiate a connection to the Internet, click the Connect button, after a few moments you will be connected to the Internet:

To enter connection settings manually, or verify the settings that have been selected automatically, click on the Connections icon:

To add a connection, click on the "+" sign and select an operator:

SMS text messages can be viewed, sent and managed via the SMS application:

Under Window --> Data Usage, there is also a data counter available, displaying historical information on connection sessions:


Insert the 310U into an available USB port on your computer. Windows will detect the new hardware automatically as a removable storage device and launch the installer wizard.
If the installer does not launch automatically, browse to My Computer and launch the device, or browse the device and select "\win\setup.exe"

The installer will then be displayed:

Click OK, the following window will be displayed:

Click Next:

Read the license agreement and select the option to agree if you accept the terms and conditions. Click Next.
The required program files and drivers will now be copied to the PC. This process may take a few minutes. When complete, click Finish:

An icon will be added to the Desktop for the AirCard Watcher connection manager dashboard application:

The application should now launch automatically. If it does not, simply double click the icon on the desktop:

The Watcher software will automatically configure itself with the appropriate operator connection settings based on the SIM card inserted into the device. To initiate a connection to the Internet, simply click the Connect button:

After a few moments you will be connected to the Internet.
If you wish to enter connection settings manually, or verify the settings that the software has selected for your SIM, click on the Connections button:

A list of configured profiles will be displayed. Existing profiles can be edited, or new profiles added. All major network operators are listed in a drop-down menu for ease of access:

A data counter is available in the Watcher software to help you keep track of the volume of data you send and receive via your device:

This can be enabled and disabled within the Options, and you can enter details of your data plan:

SMS messages can be composed, viewed and managed:

And a data rate graph is also available in the main dashboard interface while connected:

Insert the Sierra Wireless AirCard 503 PC Express card (or PCMCIA card using the supplied adapter) into the Mac. The device will be detected automatically and presented as a removable drive:

Double click the Installer file:

Click Continue:

Click Install, you will be warned that the machine will need to be rebooted once the installation is complete:

There is no accompanying CD with the AirCard 503 modem, instead you can simply insert the device directly into the PC Express slot on your PC, or the PCMCIA slot via the supplied adapter.
Windows will detect the new hardware automatically as a USB storage device and launch the installation utility automatically:

Click OK, the following window will be displayed:

Select the option to accept the license agreement and click Install. The necessary program files will be copied to your PC and the required driver files installed. Insert the CD into the PC. The installation wizard should launch automatically. If it does not, select Run from the Start Menu and type in ‘D:\setup.exe’ (where D is the letter of your CD drive). The following window will be displayed:

Click on software installation. The following window will be displayed:

Select software installation (Vista, XP, 2000). The following window will be displayed:

Click Next. The following window will be displayed:

Select the appropriate region and click Next. The following window will be displayed:

Read the license agreement and select the option to accept if you agree to the conditions. Click Next. The following window will be displayed:

Click Next. The following window will be displayed:

Click Install. Program files will now be copied to your PC, this may take a few minutes. Progress of the installation progress will be displayed in the system tray:

Once the installation has completed, the following window will be displayed:

Click Finish.
An icon for 3G Watcher will now be displayed on the desktop:

Now insert the AirCard into the PC. Windows will detect the new hardware automatically:

Once you receive notification that ‘Your new hardware is installed and ready to use’, double click the 3G Watcher icon on the desktop. The following window will be displayed:

The necessary connection settings for your network provider should have been configured automatically by the software.
To initiate a connection to the Internet, simply press the Connect button.
To review the connection settings, click on the Tools menu and select Connections:

Read the license agreement and select the option to accept if you agree to the terms and conditions. Click Next:

The required program files and drivers will now be copied to the PC and Windows will detect additional new hardware. This process may take a few minutes. Once complete, click Finish.
The 3G Watcher connection manager application will launch automatically:

Click the Connect button to initiate the connection to the Internet:

The 3G Watcher application also have an SMS Manager that enables you to compose, read and manage the SMS text messages on your SIM card:


Problem
Network Connections are locked within the Watcher software and cannot be removed. When connecting to a profile, regardless of which profile is selected, the "Mobile Broadband" connection is selected.
Cause
The Sierra Wireless Watcher software includes a feature that enables compatible PCs to manage devices from within the Windows 7 Control Panel. Should the above issue be experienced, this feature should be disabled.
Resolution
Within the Watcher options, select General. In the right-hand pane scroll down to the section Windows 7 Mobile Broadband. If this option is enabled, set it to disabled and click Apply.
