User Interface

As we have come to expect from the Android platform, the Sensation XE offers up to 7 homescreens, available by swiping to the left and right of the landing screen, and as with the Sensation before it, screens rotate on a carousel.

All manner of application shortcuts, Internet-enabled widgets, contacts, bookmarks and hardware controls can be added to any of the homescreens, and additional widgets can be downloaded from the Android Market.

Music

As the Sensation XE is HTC's first device to come with Beats Audio included, I should probably start by looking at the music playing capability. The music player that ships as standard on the Sensation XE is the same as that on other HTC Android models, but it is the inclusion of the Beats Audio soundstage and earphones that really sets this device apart. I'm a bit of an audiophile and like to think I know a little bit about hifi, and the Beats Audio in-ear 'phones certainly gave my very expensive Sennheisers some stiff competition. You can use other headphones with the Sensation XE if you want to, naturally, and can turn off the Beats Audio sound processing also should you wish...but I can't think why you'd want to - the playback quality really is very good indeed for a portable music device, let alone a Smartphone.

Email

As with the Sensation, the XE supports a wide range of email accounts and can automatically configure common email providers based on the email address entered, or can support any POP/IMAP service if the settings are entered manually.
Exchange email, contacts and calendar can also be synced over the air using HTC's own Exchange ActiveSync client built in.

Synchronisation can be set up on a schedule so that on specific days of the week and during certain hours updates are pushed to the device in real time, and outside of those hours mail is synced on a set schedule, manually or not at all to preserve data band battery power.

Multiple email accounts can be configured and displayed in a single unified inbox, colour coded. All mailbox folders are also available.

Your email signature can be set and edited as can your out of office message and status.

Access to the Exchange Global Address List is also available, and matching addresses will autocomplete as you compose a new email.

Connectivity

The Sensation XE can be used as a portable WiFi hotspot, enabling you to connect up to 5 WiFi-capable devices simultaneously and share the XE's high-speed 3G cellular connection to the Internet. Connections can be encrypted for security.

The XE can further be used as a USB modem on Windows and Mac, or can share the Internet connection of a Windows or Mac PC when connected via USB in Internet Passthrough mode.

Miscellaneous

Polaris Office enables you to view Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents, and create and edit Word and Excel documents.

HTC Watch allows you to download and view movies from HTC's online movie service.

The Quick Lookup feature enables you to concurrently search a number of popular reference sources including Google, Wikipedia and YouTube.
