The Motorola Atrix is billed as the world's most powerful smartphone, featuring dual-core processing technology, which when combined with the device's qHD display provides a faster email, browsing, multimedia and gaming experience. Combine all of this with the Atrix's optional "webtop" hardware screen and keyboard docking station you can enjoy a truly mobile desktop capability.
Fingerprint recognition capability makes the device secure whilst still immediately accessible, and with 48GB of memory (16GB on board with support for up to 32GB of microSD card memory) you can carry around thousands of photos, songs, films and more.
The below video showcases some of the Atrix's powerful features:

In this article I shall give a brief overview of some of the Atrix's key features.
Detailed specifications are available on the Motorola web site - http://www.motorola.com/Consumers/GB-EN/Consumer-Products-and-Services/M...

Running Android 2.2, the Atrix features the usual 7 swipeable homescreens arranged left-to-right that will be familiar to Android veterans, with each screen having the ability to display any number of application or settings shortcuts, Internet-enabled widgets, hardware controls, contacts, web page shortcuts and more

A wide range of default Android shortcuts are available as well as a number of Motorola's own

The list of preinstalled applications on the Atrix is as follows:
As you'd expect from a business-centric phone, the Atrix features Exchange ActiveSync as standard, enabling you to synchronise email, contacts and calendar with a Microsoft Exchange server over the air (Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 or later).

Setting up an Exchange email account does require that you enter a number of details, including your own email address, your username and password, and the domain that you belong to (depending on how your Exchange server has been configured)
Useful tip - if you're unsure what your domain information is, you can ask your IT department, but if you also log into a desktop or laptop, the domain will be the contents of the "Log Into" field when you log in, beneath the password field

By default all folders will be enabled for synhronisation, you can edit the properties of the account when finished and manually select what you wish to synchronise, and how often:

All mailbox folders are available:

Out of Office status and message can be set from the device as well as your default email signature:

When composing new email messages, suggestions from the Global Address List and local contacts will be displayed automatically:

The Atrix also boasts a clever feature whereby email messages containing attachments can be forwarded from the device without the need to first download the whole attachment (this feature requires Exchange 2007 or later):

The Atrix ships with the QuickOffice suite preinstalled, which provides the ability to view Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint documents as well as PDF files, but also the ability to create and edit Word and Excel files

Also included as standard is a file manager application, allowing you to keep track of where your documents are stored. A nice touch is the Shared Folders feature, which optionally allows you to share documents via WiFi with others

The Atrix can act as a 3G mobile wireless hotspot, providing Internet connectivity to any WiFi-capable client within range, such as your laptop. The wireless connection can be protected by WEP, WPA or WPA2 encryption for security:

From a laptop or desktop PC connected to the same network as the Atrix via its WiFi connection, it is possible to access and edit information held on the Atrix from your PC's web browser using the Phone Portal feature.
Connect to the wireless network from the Atrix and enable the Phone Portal. The phone's URL will be displayed on the screen:

From your PC, enter the same URL into the browser and the following interface will be displayed (provided that the PC is connected to the same network as the Atrix):

Enabling you to view and edit contacts, manage text messages, configure phone settings such as ring tone and, if using Internet Explorer, access the phone's file storage:

Featuring DLNA-certification, the Atrix can be used to share pictures, music and video with any other DLNA-capable device such as a TV, games console, PC or another Smartphone

The Atrix also includes a number of useful features including a Task Manager so you can keep track of what applications are running on your device that may be taking up memory or using the battery

The Data Manager utility keeps track of how much data you send and receive over the cellular connection and allows you to define profiles so that social networking applications may only use the WiFi connection to keep costs down

The Battery Saver lets you turn off features outside peak hours, such as overnight, to preserve battery life if you're not within reach of a charger

The Atrix is indeed a powerhouse of functionality, fast and responsive with plenty of storage. One slight annoyance I found when first powering on the phone is that you cannot use the phone initially without a SIM card inserted, but I imagine most people would have a SIM to put in, and once powered on for the first time you can then remove the SIM and continue to use the device.
The document editing and sharing feature will be a boon for professionals on the go who need to make last-minute adjustments to documents and share them without the need for a laptop and USB stick.
The WiFi hotspot also means should you have your laptop with you, you don't need an additional USB 3G dongle.
I haven't made mention of the Atrix's social networking integration in this post, but as with most Android smartphones you can rest assured that Twitter and Facebook updates can be delivered directly to your homescreen in a single feed.
The multimedia capabilities of the Atrix, especially when combined with the Smart Dock accessory make the device not only your laptop replacement, but your home cinema away from home, your hifi, your photo album and more.
