This article is not strictly relevant to the main content of the blog but it happened to me recently and I was able to resolve the issue. The Buffalo web site is not a huge source of support so if any of this is useful to anyone then so much the better.

My TeraStation Pro TS-HTGL unit recently stopped booting all of its own accord and decided instead to display an E06 error message on the front. The various Buffalo forums were unable to decide as to whether this meant a problem with one of the hard drives in the unit, or a more serious issue with the device's processor itself.

I was fortunate enough to have access to another unit, so transferred all of the drives into that and put its drives into my unit. My unit booted with the replacement drives, the other unit with my drives, did not boot. So a problem with one of the drives then.

I put each of the drives into a spare SATA connection on a PC to see which drive was faulty, but all of them were recognised no problem. At this stage I was fortunate in that the data on the drives was not essential, so I opted to format all drives and replace them in the TeraStation.

Now the TeraStation reported a different error when powered on, saying that it had lost its boot image and was in TFTP mode.

From here recovery was realtively straightforward. The firmwares for the TeraStation range are all avaialble on the Buffalo web site (http://www.buffalo-technology.com/support/downloads/)

Download the current firmware and extract the contents to your PC:

Now you need to set up a TFTP server (Trivial File Transfer Protocol). A free utility is available from SolarWinds, for Windows at any rate, (http://www.solarwinds.com/):

which when installed can be configured to act as a server for a specific directory - browse to where you extracted the contents of the TeraStation firmware:

Start the service.

Now you need to assign your PC a specific IP address of 192.168.11.1 / 255.255.255.0

Connect both the PC and the TeraStation to the same switch, or directly to each other. Power on the TeraStation. It will assign itself an IP address of 192.168.11.150 and collect the required image files from the PC via TFTP.
Once that has completed the unit will now boot.

I had hoped that was the solution, however I found that when the TeraStation was powered off and on again it then reported the same missing boot image.

The solution that worked for me was to repeat the above procedure to allow the TeraStation to collect the required files via TFTP and boot. When booted, now run the "TSUpdater.exe" file contained in the ZIP file you downloaded. This will search for available TeraStations on the network and apply a firmware update to it/them.

I found that this application failed to detect any units because it was already running that firmware version. If you edit the TSUpdater.ini file contained in the same file, change the option "VersionCheck" from 1 to 0, save the file and re-run the TSUpdater utility. It will now detect the TeraStation and allow you to apply the firmware update.

Now the unit will boot as usual and not complain any longer. I did loose my data, but hopefully you'll come up with a better solution than I did, or have your data backed up elsewhere.
