In the event that your Windows Phone 7 device is lost or stolen, Microsoft have a number of tools available to all device owners via their Windows Live account.
If log into http://windowsphone.live.com with your Windows Live account (the same account used on the Windows Phone 7 device if you have more than one), as well as the ability to synchronise photos, contacts and calendar entries between your Live account and your phone, you can also select from a number of options: you can make your phone ring for 60 seconds if you have simply misplaced it; you can lock your phone with a password and display a lock message on the screen; you can show your phone's current location on a map using the phone's GPS capability; or you can erase all data on the phone to ensure that your personal information cannot be viewed

The service works by sending SMS text message commands to the phone, which doesn't rely on your phone's data connection being active (but does rely on your SIM card still being in your phone). Text messages are not displayed in your phone's inbox, but you will be charged for the messages by your operator.
When setting up the service for the first time you will be prompted to specify your country and mobile phone number:

You can then locate your phone via GPS:

Lock your phone and display a custom lock screen messages:

Or erase all data on your phone:

Log into your Windows Live account to test the functionality yourself.
