Walking Navigation added to Google Maps for Android
The Google Maps mobile for Android application has been updated to include Walking Navigation, a feature that provides directions suited for the pedestrian. Using your Android PDA's GPS capability, Walking Navigation will provide routes that only use footpaths and pedestrian walkways, and has a number of features such as the ability to vibrate in your pocket when you need to make a turn if you wish to disable the voice guidance option.
The Street View map can also turn automatically as ou rotate the phone to help you orient yourself and find your bearings.
This service is still in beta and Google point out that you should always pay attention to road and warning signs and to be safe when following directions that may not take into account temporary or recent hazards or environmental changes.
Google Maps 4.5 is available for download in the Android Market for devices running Android 1.6 or later.
Also available in the Market is an update to the Street View application that enables you to see a sneak preview of where you're going on foot:
