Version 4.7 of the Zune desktop software for Windows is now available on the Zune web site (http://zune.net/en-us/products/software/download/default.htm), adding support for Windows Phone 7 devices. NOTE - you should install the Zune software before connecting your Windows Phone 7 device to your PC.
Installation is quick and painless, but depending on your system may require some additional updates to be installed (which will be done automatically) and also a reboot:

Once installed, an icon will be added to the desktop and the Start menu:

The standard interface will be familiar to users of the Zune music player, but I'm not one so this was all new to me. When launched for the first time, you will be prompted to specify a number of configuration options:

and then the main interface will be displayed:

You can now connect your Windows Phone 7 device via USB, Windows will detect the new hardware automatically:

And a wizard will launch prompting you to identify the new phone as well as automatically check for any software updates:

Once complete the main dashboard screen will be displayed:

The Collection menu displays local multimedia content on the PC:

and the Marketplace tab displays online purchasable content grouped into music, movies and apps:

Multimedia content can be moved from the PC to the PC simply by dragging and dropping it into the Zune window, or synchronisation can be automatic. Within the Settings you can specify how you want synchronisation to behave, and which folders you'd like to sync:

Wireless Sync is a nice feature that allows you to sync content over WiFi without the need for a local USB connection, provided that both the Windows PC and the Windows Phone 7 device are both connected to same wireless access point:

NOTE - the Zune software enables you to synchronise multimedia content only: it is not possible to synchronise contact and calendar information with the desktop, PIM information would need to be synchronise over the air with an online service, such as a corporate Microsoft Exchange server, Google or Windows Live.
